Spring Ascent: Mt. Fuji Snow Climb Adventure

Climb Mt. Fuji in Snow: An Exclusive Spring Mountaineering Adventure in Japan!

*This is a group tour

Seeking a truly distinctive and demanding Japanese experience beyond the usual tourist routes?

Embark on our spring/ snow mountaineering climb to the top of Japan! Operated by our specialized sister branch, Mt. Fuji Guides! Experience the iconic peak in its stark, snow-covered state, far from the summer throngs. This is your opportunity to achieve a significant personal feat on a legendary mountain in its rawest form, under the expert care of Mt. Fuji Guides.

About This Climb

This 2-day snow mountaineering experience, led by the skilled guides at Mt. Fuji Guides, takes you up the less-trafficked eastern side of Mt. Fuji. Your journey begins with an overnight stay at the trailhead of the Subashiri trail (approximately 2000 meters), allowing for your body to adjust before the climb and to get our gear ready for the following day. On Day 2, we'll make our summit push.

Climbing Mt. Fuji in Spring

While the main climbing season for Mt. Fuji begins in mid-July, Spring Ascents offer a unique off season opportunity. Following autumn snowfall (typically starting in October), the usual hiking trails become mountaineering routes. Although we don't offer full winter climbs, access to the 5th Station trailhead usually opens by late April, making spring climbing possible as daylight increases and conditions moderate. However, varying snow levels mean all participants must be equipped with crampons, ice axes, and other essential winter mountaineering gear. We welcome spring tour bookings for climbing Mt. Fuji, but it's important to note a higher chance of last-minute cancellations due to the rapidly changing weather conditions and snow conditions on the mountain. Our decision to proceed will be made as close to the tour date as possible.

Who Should Join?

  • Experienced hikers and trekkers looking for a unique summit experience in Japan.
  • Individuals with a good level of physical fitness; capable of jogging 10km tomorrow.
  • Those comfortable with variable weather conditions often encountered on Mt. Fuji.
  • Those eager to learn how to use winter mountaineering equipment such as crampons and ice axes.

Important Considerations:

  • Snow Conditions on Mt. Fuji: Be aware that as summer approaches, snowmelt can occur rapidly. Even if there's no snow on the day of your spring ascent, the climb will still proceed.
  • Unpredictable Mt. Fuji Weather: Understand that weather conditions on Mount Fuji are changeable. Your guided tour may be altered or canceled due to adverse weather for your safety.
  • Good Level of Fitness Required: Participants need to be physically fit and have previous hiking experience to undertake this challenging climb.
  • Safety First Approach: Our experienced guides prioritize your safety on Mt. Fuji and may prevent anyone deemed unfit or unprepared from participating in the snow climb.
  • No Sunrise Summit on Spring Tours: Please note that our Spring Ascent tours do not aim for a sunrise summit due to the shorter daylight hours during this season.
  • Off-Season Climbing Conditions: Be prepared for off-season conditions where trails are not maintained, mountain huts are closed, and summit temperatures can drop well below freezing during your Mt. Fuji climb.
  • Increased Risk of Turning Back: Understand that there's a higher chance of needing to turn back before reaching the summit of Mt. Fuji due to weather, snow conditions and/or other safety reasons during this spring mountaineering period.
  • Flexibility with Dates Required: Due to the weather-dependent nature of snow ascents on Mt. Fuji, Mt. Fuji Guides reserves a 2-day weather margin for the climb. Please ensure your travel dates have a flexibility of up to 2 days (for the start date).

Prepare for an Epic Adventure: Your Mt. Fuji Spring Ascent

Factors to Consider:

Not an Easy Climb.

  • Significant Vertical Gain: You'll ascend approximately 1700 vertical meters (around 5600 feet) over steep and rocky terrain, with a substantial portion covered in snow that can vary from soft new snow to hard ice.
  • Average Ascent Time: Expect an average of 6.5 hours of continuous climbing to reach the summit of Mt. Fuji.
  • Average Descent Time: The descent typically takes around 4 hours.
  • Summit Cut-Off: To ensure the safety of everyone on our guided Mt. Fuji tours, there's a strict cut-off time of 7.5 hours to reach the summit. Our experienced guides may turn you back at any point if your pace is too slow or for any other safety concerns.

Weather on Mt. Fuji: Be Ready for Anything!

Mt. Fuji's weather is notoriously unpredictable. During your spring climb, be prepared to experience dry, wet, hot, and cold conditions, often within the same day! Expect rapid and drastic changes, potentially shifting from mild spring-like weather to snowy winter conditions in an instant. Packing the necessary equipment for all types of weather is crucial for a safe and successful summit attempt.

Layering is Key to Your Comfort and Safety:

Mastering your clothing layers is vital for thermal regulation during your Mt. Fuji climb. Remove layers during strenuous activity to prevent sweating and chilling, and add insulation during rest breaks to stay warm. A high-quality insulating jacket is essential. We strongly recommend technical, quick-drying fabrics and advise against cotton.

Understanding Altitude on Your Ascent

While supplemental oxygen isn't needed on Mt. Fuji, all climbers will feel the effects of the altitude to some degree. You might experience slight shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea. While serious altitude related problems are rare, being aware of the potential effects is important for a safe climb.

Pack Smart, Climb Strong

Remember that the necessary equipment for climbing Mt. Fuji can make your backpack weigh between 5-10kgs!

Training is Your Secret Weapon for Summit Success!

Proper training significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit. We strongly advise an active lifestyle with plenty of time spent on your feet. Improve your stamina and cardio through activities like hiking, walking, running, swimming, stair climbing, and cycling. Simulating the climb by hiking with a 10kg backpack will also greatly help your preparedness.
