About Fuji Outdoor: Your Trusted Experts for Mt. Fuji Adventures

Fuji Outdoor is a specialized division of JRT Trading, a registered and leading travel agent with over 20 years of experience in Japan's winter tourism sector. As part of a network of five distinct branches, we are dedicated to providing exceptional and unique outdoor adventure experiences across Japan.

The "JRT" in our parent company stands for "Japan Road Trip," reflecting our core value of exploration. At Fuji Outdoor, this spirit of discovery is central to our operations. We are committed to showcasing the very best of Japan's natural wonders, with a particular focus on the iconic Mt. Fuji, a destination that continues to captivate and inspire us.

The Birth of Fuji Outdoor

JRT Trading, the parent company of Fuji Outdoor, has a long-standing commitment to showcasing the unique tapestry of Japan, seamlessly blending its rich cultural heritage with its stunning natural beauty in our renowned winter tours.

As the seasons transition and the snow recedes, our dedication to adventure in Japan continues unabated. Japan's captivating culture and traditions, deeply rooted in ancient religions and a vibrant history, make it a truly exceptional destination for exploration.

At Fuji Outdoor, we firmly believe that immersing oneself in Japan's breathtaking natural landscapes offers the most profound way to experience its essence. With this conviction, Fuji Outdoor was established to curate and deliver the premier summer adventure Japan has to offer, centered around the iconic Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji Guides & Fuji Outdoor

Whats the difference?

Fuji Outdoor and Mt. Fuji Guides, both divisions of the established JRT Trading, operate in close synergy, sharing personnel, operational resources, and a unified commitment to delivering exceptional experiences centered around Mt. Fuji. While both brands offer similar core Mt. Fuji tours, they are designed to serve distinct traveler needs.

Mt. Fuji Guides specializes in off-season Mt. Fuji adventures, providing expert-led climbs during the challenging spring conditions that necessitate technical mountaineering skills and specialized equipment, as well as other trips outside the peak July-September period.

It's important to note that all Mt. Fuji climbs operated during the main season (July 10th - September 10th) are managed under the Fuji Outdoor brand.

Beyond the standard in-season Mt. Fuji climbs, Fuji Outdoor extends its offerings to include personalized itineraries throughout Japan. This allows travelers seeking unique and customized adventures beyond the mountain itself to explore the diverse landscapes and culture of Japan with our expert guidance.

In essence, Mt. Fuji Guides focuses on the specialized off-season Mt. Fuji climbs, while Fuji Outdoor encompasses the main season Mt. Fuji tours and a broader range of tailored travel experiences across Japan.

Clayton grew up skiing and snowboarding on the river banks of Edmonton, Alberta and the Rocky Mountain resorts of Jasper and Banff. Working at the local ski hill from the age of 15, he knew he wanted to be part of the ski and snowboard industry for the rest of his life.

In 1996, Clayton had the opportunity to visit Japan for the summer. After seeing firsthand the incredible popularity of snowboarding, his original plan was to bring Japanese snowboarders to Canada for multiple resort tours and backcountry experiences. With very little Japanese ability, no money, and no connections, he failed big time!

After studying Japanese and graduating with a degree in international business from the Universty of Alberta, he headed back to Japan in 1998 to make those connections, and immediately fell in love with the food, culture, and ridiculously deep powder.

While teaching English and gaining a foothold in Japan, Clayton finally had an opportunity to put his years of exploring the resorts and mountains of Hokkaido to use. The rest is history!
