The Ancient Pilgrimage Hike: What to Bring

Having the right equipment will greatly increase your comfort and enjoyment while hiking.

Mt. Fuji Guides does offer rental equipment allowing you to travel lightly.

The Historical Fuji Hike trail is a well-maintained path of dirt, rock, and gravel. While a comfortable mid-cut hiking boot is a great choice for ankle support, low-cut hiking shoes or trail running shoes are also suitable.  Road running shoes can be used, but aren't ideal. The trail can be muddy or slippery in places, and shoes with better grip will provide a safer and more enjoyable hike.

Wool or quick drying synthetic materials only! NO COTTON!

A rain jacket and rain pants are a must given the volatility of the weather that can be found on Mt Fuji. Rain wear also acts as a wind breaker!

Quick drying synthetic materials only! AVOID COTTON (no jeans)!

Temperatures at high elevations can be chilly, in particular during the spring and autumn months. While you won't need heavy layers, it's a good idea to bring an extra layer, especially for breaks or if the weather changes. A long-sleeve shirt, a light fleece, or a sweatshirt is perfect for staying comfortable.

Waterproof gloves are recommended.

Hiking Poles to take some of the pressure off your joints and also maintain a good rhythm for both the ascent and descent.

It is advised to have a comfortable hiking backpack with a waist belt to help distribute the weight of your pack to your hips.

On very rainy days, a backpack rain cover will not be enough to keep the contents of your backpack dry. You will be glad to have an extra measure of safety to keep warm layers, electronics and other essentials dry!

We will take short snack breaks during the hike.  Please bring enough high-energy snacks and at least 1.5 - 2 liters of water per person for the anticipated 5-7 hour duration of the Historical Yoshida Route hike.

*In Season (July 1 - Sep. 10)

There will be mountain huts open at the start of the trail and at the turn-around point at the top which will provide the opportunity to purchase cold/hot drinks and food.

*In Off-Season

There may be no opportunities to purchase food or drinks on the mountain so we advise you bring enough snacks and water with you for the full hike.

You must be responsible for the disposal of all of your trash! There will be no trash cans available on Mt Fuji.

If you purchase an item at a mountain hut, that hut will accept whatever trash is produced. This will be the only exception.

The mountain huts on the Historical Yoshida Route will be cash based!

As there is no running water, the restrooms will also cost on avg ¥300 every time.

It will be a good idea to prepare ¥100 coins and ¥2000-3000 for additional food, snacks, water.

If you would like to purchase souvenirs on Mt Fuji, additional cash will be required.

The first aid kits Mt. Fuji Guides guides carry will be reserved for emergencies. Giving supplies away for small cuts etc, will take resources away for a true emergency.

Please bring a small first aid kit of band-aids, painkillers, wet wipes and any other personal medication you may need.
